The Artist

When you merge good storytelling with eclectic songwriting, Martina Downey definitely comes to mind. Riding on the wave of the songwriter’s era, Martina offers fresh observations of the world. A thorough blend of rock, rhythmic soul, and ambience, her sound can be best described as alternative. Her first CD, “Whatever it Takes,” flows seamlessly through an ambient soundscape. Compounded by rich lyrics and vibrant vocals, “Whatever it Takes” tells the stories of those often forgotten even as they survive against all odds.

Born in Paterson, NJ, Martina grew up listing to R&B and Rock of the 60s and 70s. Writing songs since age 17, she taught herself how to sing by imitating her favorites over and over again. In the 70s, Martina put a quarter in a jukebox and discovered David Bowie. Her concept of music changed altogether. John Lennon was another one of her major influences. Through him, she learned that music had infinite possibilities. Like Lennon, Martina’s social consciousness reverberates through music her. She idolized Joan Armatrading, a trailblazer in musicianship. Gospel music was always looming in the Downey household. Martina never considered herself to be a true gospel singer, but those early influences contributed to Martina’s foray into gospel music in her adult years.

Over the last decade, Martina has sung solo with several gospel choirs including Lavender Light Gospel Choir and the Voices of Liberation. Martina has sung in several rock bands since in the mid 80s through early 90s, among them being the black rock band Nu-Lyf and Ball.

In 2003, she appeared at the Provincetown Theatre. A year later, she made her theatrical debut at the Harlem Theatre in B. Lois Wadas’ WomenWording. Most recently, she has performed at the WOW Café. No doubt Martina has proven that she can master any genre of music.
